Event Description

The Presidents Trail Camporee is a new invitational camporee hosted by the Quincy Friends of Scouting. The event includes a guided tour of the President's Trail, advancement work (including a choice of merit badges) and a service project. All units will set up camp on Pageant Field in Merrymount Park. Participants will receive a patch and medal for the trail.

This event requires careful planning. Some of the key logistics:

  • Due to tight space, Scouts are expected to sleep three to each tent. We will have a 1/2 site, which is 25x50 ft.
  • We need to bring everything for a complete campsite set up on a field.
  • We will not have access to power outlets during the event.
  • Ground fires are not permitted. Above ground wood or charcoal fire may be allowed (TBC).
  • Only the vehicle pulling the trailer will be parked near the site.
  • Our camp site will be a short hike from where the passenger vehicle(s) get parked, so all of our stuff should be brought in the trailer or in one day pack per person.

For more information about President's Trail Camporee, see:

This trip is open to Scouts BSA members.

Registration

  • Permission Slip - Each participating Scout must submit this to the Scoutmaster by September 5.
  • Event registration fee - pay by September 5 (includes food):
Youth or Adult - $108 (online payment)
  • Annual Health and Medical Record - Each participant must have submitted this record within the previous year and no later than September 5. This trip requires only Parts A and B, including copy of insurance card (both sides). A medical exam is not required.
  • Adults - In accordance with a BSA rule that became effective September 1, 2023, "All adults staying overnight in connection with a Scouting activity must be currently registered in an adult fee required position as listed or as an adult program participant."

Packing

Use our Personal Camping List to ensure you pack the needed items and see our Personal Camping Gear page for descriptions of most of the items needed and for how to use the checklist. You can pack your stuff in a backpack (the big kind), a duffle bag or a tub. It is strongly recommended to put your name and phone number on objects, especiallly outerwear, cell phones, day packs and hats. Specific items to bring:

  • Full uniform - We are required to wear this any time outside our camp site, so wear it to the church for our departure.
  • Water bottle.
  • Day pack.
  • Wet weather clothing.
  • Long pants - October evenings can be cold, and shorts are not acceptable for preventing hypothermia.
  • Spending money - There will be concessions at the event for food and souvenirs.
  • Food - Each patrol should plan to provide 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners. Participants bring your own drinks and food for snacks.

Travel

  • Meet at the Epworth United Methodist Church parking lot at 7:30 AM Saturday for departure by 8:00 AM. This early departure is needed to allow us to complete campsite setup by 11:30 AM. We need to leave on-time. If you miss our departure from the church, you will need to bring your Scout to the event.
  • We will initially drive to the Quincy High School parrking lot, approximmately a 1 hour drive. For there, camporee staff will release us to drive to the drop-off area at Merrymount Park.
  • We estimate departure from the park at 9:00 AM and a return to the church at about 10:00 AM on Monday.
