Mount Grace Backpacking TripSaturday, June 22 - |
Troop 54 traveled to Mount Grace, in Warwick, Massachusetts for our first time, hiking the New England Trail (NET). We have hiked some other sections of the NET previously. We had 3 youth and 2 adult participants on this trip. We hiked 4.9 miles the first day and 5.3 miles the second day with just over 1100 feet of ascent the first day. On the way in, we followed the NET; on the way out, we started with the Round the Mountain trail and finished on the NET. We managed to stick to our trail plan, except for a short stretch near the end of the second day. We stopped for lunch the first day at the summit of Mount Grace; unfortunately, it was so foggy at the time that there was no view. We camped at the Mount Grace Lean-to, which was right on the NET. See our actual trail, as recorded by Joshua Froimson's GPS: My Maps - map uploaded into Google My Maps Initially, we got water to purify from a stream a short way through the woods. It turned out that a smaller stream ran on the other side of the trail and crossed the trail about 200 feet away. A bonus was that the closer water was also clearer. The Scouts set up their tent in the shelter, and the leaders camped behind it. There was only enough flat ground for a few tents around the shelter, so it would be a difficult location for a large group. The weather was in the 70's most of the day. It felt cooler when it was raining, which was a lot of the time. We were all pretty moist for most of the trip. This was our 186th consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip. |
