Announcing 2013 Silver Beaver Recipients   The Mohegan Council is proud to announce this year’s Silver Beaver selection. The Silver Beaver award is the highest honor a local Council can bestow on a volunteer. These Scouters have made an impact on the lives of youth giving service to our Council.   The honorees are:   Ron Marsh, a committee member of Troop 141 in the Quinsigamond district. Ron is an Eagle Scout, attended the 50th anniversary National Jamboree in Colorado Springs, and served as a Scoutmaster for ten year. He has volunteered as the Quinsig District Commissioner and is a member of our Order of the Arrow Lodge. In recent years Ron has been very active with Friends of the Valley. He has been the co-chair has given more than 750 hours of direct service to Treasure Valley over the last five years. He is currently our point man for the upcoming construction of our Solar Farm.   Juan Guzman, a unit commissioner in the Massasoit district. Juan is active with his Pack & Troop at Blessed John Paul II parish in Southbridge. He is a retired USAF officer and has volunteered for Scouting in many ways, including help on the advancement committee and with our Scoutreach program. He has received the Award of Merit and is the proud father of two Eagle Scouts.   Debra Moore, an Assistant Scout master in Troop 131 in the Hassanamisco district. She has spent more than twenty years making scouting happen in the town of Sutton. And she is an equal opportunity Scouter being heavily involved in both Boy & Girl Scouting. She’s been involved with numerous Red Cross blood drives. She is a Eucharistic minister at St Mark’s church and has lead the youth group. Debby was even featured in Scouting Magazine for her award winning Dutch Oven creation.   Please join us in honoring these fine folks at our Council Recognition dinner on Friday, May 10th at Maronis Park.
Character Counts Breakfast The Character Counts Breakfast is an annual event hosted by the Boy Scouts of America Mohegan Council to recognize individuals in the community that dedicate themselves to the common good through volunteerism, social activism, and ethical leadership. Each award recipient lives according to the Scout Oath and Law whether they were or were not ever a Scout and exemplifies the ideal of helping other people at all times. At a breakfast sponsored by the Telegram & Gazette, Creedon and Co., Inc., Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan, Coghlin Electrical Contractors / Network Services, and Commerce Bank on April 30, 2013, 162 people attended to witness the ceremony. TouchTomorrow WPI will once again host the TouchTomorrow festival in concert with the NASA Centennial Challenge (Sample Return Robot competition). The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th from 10 am to 4 pm and will be held rain or shine. Project Popcorn – Shipping Popcorn to Our Troops An event for our Armed Services Sponsored by Order of the Arrow Pachachaug Lodge #525   Project Popcorn is a service project sponsored by Pachachaug Lodge #525. Our goal is to ship cases of Popcorn donated by the Mohegan Council with Letters to OUR COUNTRY’S Armed Forces stationed in Afghanistan. WE NEED YOUR HELP with the letter campaign and the cost of shipping.   We want to include EVERYONE in this event. The more letters with popcorn, the better! So please, write some letters! You can email them to treasurer525@gmail.com! (Right) Participants gather at the top of the tower on Mt. Carmel.    For its April camping trip, Troop 54 backpacked in Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, CT. Arriving late on Friday night, the troop camped that first night at nearby Wah Wah Taysee, a very small Scout camp operated by the Connecticut Yankee Council. The trail shelter at the camp was like a log cabin minus one wall. It included a stone fireplace, a built-in wood box and a nice, wood table. Troop 54 was the only troop in the camp for that weekend.   Following breakfast on Saturday, the troop did a brief service and conservation project, removing garlic mustard, an invasive species. Then, the troop hit the trail to and through Sleeping Giant. The high point was the stone tower at the peak of Mount Carmel. The troop followed a serpentine path to target a five mile hike. Although it got down near freezing overnight, most of the weekend was pretty comfortable, and it was warm enough for the Scouts to use the troop's Pocket Rocket lightweight stoves.   The Scouts re-worked the trail plan for the last day to avoid the steep hike over the peak and to be shorter. As a result, the troop hiked six miles on Saturday and four miles on Sunday.   This was the troop's fifty-second consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip.
Den 5 of Pack 147 Oxford Tours Waste Management's Wheelabrator Submitted by Debi Lomuscio-Rosebrooks - Co-leader Den 5           On April 24th, Den 5 of Pack 147 Oxford and their families took a tour of Waste Management's Wheelabrator facility. Steve was our guide and he was very informative on recycling and energy. Steve has worked for the company for 22 years and knows the in and out of every part of the plant. The scouts and parents all enjoyed going inside the enormous facility and learning about what happens to and with our rubbish once it's brought there. Fun Fact: the huge smoke stacks we see from the road are taller/longer than a football field! 325 feet to be exact! Tours are free and easy to book.

From left to right: Banafo Abbeyquaye, Shayne Brenner, Alyxandr Srnka, Bishop McManus, Timothy Probst, Porter Magnuson, and Will Fleming (not pictured: Devin Travers).  The fruits of months of hard work and commitment on the part of 42 Scouts – including 27 from our own Mohegan Council units – culminated in the presentation of awards by Bishop Robert McManus at a Mass celebrated at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester, on Saturday, April 20.   Medals for the completion of requirements for the Catholic Cub Scouting awards Light of Christ or Parvuli Dei were presented to the following Mohegan Council Scouts: Matthew Case, Gabriel Conboy, James Farrell, Christopher Gagner, Domenic Lanava, Timothy Maenpaa, William Thibeault, James Alderton, Jean-Pierre De La Cruz DeJesus, John Gorman, Andrew Graves, Ryan Hunter, Cody josti, Nathaniel Larkin, Michael Mullaly, Rolando Perea, Antoni Piascik, Daniel Piselli, Eamon Reilly, and John Stewart.   Catholic Scouts Banafo Abbeyquaye of Troop 180 and William Fleming of Troop 9 received the Ad Altare Dei award. Five Catholic Scouts were awarded the Pope Pius XII award; Porter Magnuson and Timothy Probst of Troop 227 Shrewsbury, Alyxandr Srnka, Devin Travers and Shayne Brenner of Troop 4Worcester. Scouts Magnuson, Travers, Brenner and Matthew Cardwell of Troop 9 Worcester were additionally honored with the Pillars of Faith award. This award is presented to Catholic Scouts who have earned all four Catholic Scouting medals (two as Cub Scouts and two as Boy Scouts).   The St. George Catholic Scouting Emblem, the highest Catholic religious award – which is named after the patron saint of Scouting - was awarded by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting to our own Thomas O’Connor of Troop 9 Worcester. This award is presented to adult members of the laity and clergy, Scouters and non-Scouters alike, who have made significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youth through Scouting.   Scouts and adults from two other Councils – Nashua Valley and Knox Trail – also received many of the above award recognitions. Catholic Girl Scout Maura Maenpaa also received the Family of God award.   While Bishop McManus presided over the Mass and ceremony, Deacon Bill White - Chairman of the Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting and Mohegan Council Board member – offered the homily to a cathedral full of Scout recipients, family members, fellow Scouts , adult leaders, friends and supporters. It was a proud day for Scouting. For those Catholic Scouts interested in becoming involved with the program and earning an award, watch for an announcement this fall for the start of our annual session. Scouts of other faiths are also encouraged to pursue the Scouting religious award offered through their faith community, just contact your pastor, rabbi or minister at your place of worship.
Merit Badge University a Big Success! Submitted by Dan Pappas, APO President 206 scouts attended the Merit Badge University hosted by the service fraternity APO at Worcester Polytechnic  Institute,  and were awarded over 400 merit badges.  The brotherhood (that would be the APO brotherhood not the OA brotherhood) had a great time and we had a few ‘guest lecturers’ from professors and community leaders.  The story was picked up by the Telegram and Gazette and WPI’s marketing division.  We had such a success that the Girl Scouts approached us to have a similar event in October.
Greetings to all from Treasure Valley Scout Reservation In 1994, Al Swenson, former Scout Executive of Mohegan Council, created a service-oriented organization populated by retirees (or those wishing they were retired). These men, all with a Scouting history, now volunteer their time and talents to Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. This group has assumed the name “Friends of Mohegan Council’s Treasure Valley Scout Reservation” usually shortened to “the Friends” (FofTV). With social interaction and a sense of accomplishment, these men meet every-other Wednesday for four hours at TVSR to provide manpower for projects necessary to support TVSR programs and/or to provide a safe environment for all entering TVSR. The FofTV have a membership of 30 +/-; some of these men have limited physical ability but are tremendous in planning and organization, others have a history of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry projects, while others (like me!) are great at following directions. Annual dues are zero. We gather about 7:45 for morning coffee and muffins. We start work by 8:00AM, break for coffee around ten and complete our work by noon. Some of our members can only participate in one Wednesday morning a month; others can only be with us 6 times per year. You define your participation rate. We also bring our spouses to TVSR for an annual picnic (early in June). Should you – or someone you know - find that you do want or need to “give back” to TVSR, join us. No formal application required - just show up (at the Magee during the cold months – at the Coghlin Building during the warm months) as close to 7:45 as traffic allows. Handicraft Lodge Rehab – A Note By Tom Chamberland, Camp Committee Chair   While out at camp this weekend, I was AMAZED by the work of the Friends in rebuilding the handicraft lodge.   I believe this is their first VERY substantial project, and as I understand at very, very little cost to the council (if any).   This building is well over 50 years old, and this is its first major rehab. (Support posts, lower walls, new doors, screens and complete electrical re wire.)   From everyone involved with the camp committee, we thank our Friends of TV for their generosity of time, talent and treasure on behalf of our scouts and Treasure Valley Scout Reservation.
