I hope you got a chance to attend last weekend’s “Event” at Treasure Valley. It was a cool autumn weekend, but the 1,000 + scouts, volunteers and families had a terrific time. On Saturday, lots of exhibitors, great food under the tent near East Lodge, non-stop activity at the COPE course, rifle range, archery range, boat dock and every other fun site at camp. Vic Irr and his committee pulled off a great weekend for our council and we thank everyone involved.
The Popcorn sale is in full swing. Units are doing their show and sells, and filling up their take-order sheets and the prizes for our scouts are stacked to the ceiling. You know if a unit does it right this can be their one big fundraiser for a whole year of great program. Over a third of each sale stays with the unit. So ask your neighbors, relatives and friends at work to support this program producing campaign.
We welcome David DerMugrditchian to our staff. He will be serving as the District Executive for Massasoit district. David is an Eagle Scout out of troop 155, hails from Whitinsville, and is a graduate of Anna Maria College.
We congratulate District Executive Greg Jacques as he takes on his new assignment in the Hassanamisco district.
As I write this we have had word that the ineligible files from an Oregon case were released today. I don’t know how this information will be portrayed in the media, but I believe the Boy Scouts of America has done an outstanding job of improving our practices of youth protection over the last twenty-five years. I would encourage you to reread the letter from our national office that is on the Mohegan Council website, and to view the You Tube video from our Chief Scout Executive Wayne Brock

What a fantastic time we had at THE EVENT. We all found “The Heart of Scouting in New England” at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation an EVENT to remember. It was a year and a half undertaking and worth all the time the committee spent. The committee ran into many obstacles along the way and overcame them all. I thank committee members: Mike Vignaly - Logistics Chair, Becky Vignaly - Logistics, Barb McCall - Registration Chair, Charlie Harris -Shooting Sports, Jay Eager - VP of Program, John Atlas - Boy Scout Activities, Dave Harelson - Cub Scout Activities, Ranger Joe Marengo, Paul Hanson - Venture Crew Activities, and Phyllis King, Helen King, Harold King, Chris Hanson, Tom Barry, Sue Barry and our staff advisor, Greg Jacques.
I would like to thank Explorer Post 2296 of Charlton for traffic and parking control on Friday and Saturday with Mike and Sue McGrath, the Advisors.
Thanks to the Commissioners Staff for their effort on the weekend to help things go smoothly.

SPOOK-O-REE - Council wide event!
Cub Scouts and Siblings 12 and under
Date/Time: Saturday Oct 27, 2012 from 3:00pm-8:00pm
Location: Treasure Valley Scout Reservation's East Side
Cost: $11 pp - Cost includes patch for the Scout, candy and toy treats, 1 free popcorn ticket and 1 free hot chocolate drink ticket per paying child, Halloween pencil and eraser.
Food: Hotdogs, snacks, soda, water, coffee, etc will be available for purchase. Please bring small bills if possible.
An exciting time of Halloween scares, dares, and fun! Scouts and siblings will travel a spooky neighborhood with various stops along the way. There will be a spooky maze, haunted house, graveyard walk, face painting, fun & games and a campfire (weather permitting).
We have a lot of firsts this year.....

For the first time this year we will have a contest for the best carved pumpkin and the best decorated pumpkin. You must bring your own pumpkin, all ready decorated or carved, to Pine Point by 6pm so it can be judged.

Also for the first time, we will have a patch judging contest (As long as we have a patch entered from each district-Quinsig District has already been entered. Waiting for Hassanamisco and Massasoit). This means there will not be a patch given out that night but the boys will be able to vote for the one they like best.

Another first will be the Build a Scarecrow Relay. You will need a team of 5 people to participate. Check in at the Haunted Maze in the trading post by 4pm with your team. Races start at 4:30pm and will continue till we run out of teams.
OK, now to go over the rules again:

NO full face masks - It gets really dark out here and we don't want to have the kids getting hurt. Although, the ghouls and zombies roaming around won't mind a little blood!!!!

NO weapons real or fake - No one is allowed to touch you nor you to touch them so this makes it even on both sides

PLEASE bring a trick or treat bag or bucket. We have some but not enough for everyone.

PLEASE know ahead of time which Pack you belong to when you register. Dealing with 3 Districts, we won't know.

PLEASE remember to bring your Non Scout Permission form with you for siblings. Have it filled out ahead of time so you won't have to wait while checking in.
Any and all candy donations are most welcome. Please drop them off at the council office before the event if you cannot attend, or drop them off at the East Lodge kitchen if you will be there.

Troop 54 Takes a Night Hike

Troop 54 travelled west to Mount Greylock for its September camping trip. The hike into the campground was short, but what really set it apart from other troop trips was making that hike at night. The group had left Worcester in the evening, arriving at the trailhead at about 9:30 PM.
The six youth and four adult participants enjoyed the night time backpacking. Rain during that first night tested tents that had been set up in the dark. Among their neighbors in the campground was Troop 44 from Walpole, Massachusetts.
Gavin MacNeal, the troop's Senior Patrol Leader, commented “The view was amazing. It was a two and a half hour drive the other direction from Worcester, and you could see all the way to Boston.” The troop returned to the camp via the Overlook Trail. This was the troop's 45th consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip.

Webelos Woods Offered Unique Experience for Scouts

This year’s Webelos Woods has held at Treasure Valley from September 21-23. 223 Cub Scouts, 64 Boy Scouts and 215 adult leaders participated in the event. This event is a chance for Webelos scouts to come out and camp at Treasurer Valley with Boy Scout Troops and work on Webelos activity pins. The event started Friday night with a movie in the East Lodge and cracker barrel. There were meals offered in the dining hall, prepared by Webelos Woods dinning staff, however most units cooked in site.
During the day Webelos 2 worked on basic scout skills and their Ready-Man activity pin, and Webelos 1 worked on 6 different activity pins ranging from Geologist, to Engineering, to Athlete. There was a trading post and snack bar open during the day as well as training for adult leaders about how to transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. That night there was a campfire and cracker barrel. Everyone had a great time at the event and enjoyed the program, learned a lot and of course had a lot of fun.
I would like to thank, Nick Key - Dinning Coordinator, Zack Palmer - Logistics Coordinator, Ken Choquette - Camp Director, and Staff Advisor Jeff Harris for all of their hard work in planning this great council event.

Pachachaug Lodge Fall Fellowship

On September 28-30 Pachachaug Lodge hosted their biggest event of the year, the Fall Fellowship. This event was a Pokemon-themed event and was also a celebration of the lodge’s 55th anniversary. The members of the lodge gave over 120 hours of service on Saturday morning and there was a Pokemon adventurer contest all around Treasurer Valley during the afternoon.

That night there was a special dinner to celebrate the 55th anniversary in which past lodge chiefs, Section NE-1B Chief Elliot Gault and Mohegan Council Scout Executive Jeff Hotchkiss attended. After the dinner the Worcester Inner Tribal Council presented Mr. Hotchkiss with a tribal totem to be hung in the East Scouter’s Lodge.
That night the excitement continued with the lodge officer elections. The lodge has 5 elected officers who lead the Lodge and are the highest ranking youth in the council. All of candidates for lodge office gave a speech and where then asked questions by the nomination committee before youth members of the lodge got to cast their votes.

Patrick Grady from troop 158 was elected as Lodge Chief, Andrew Reiter from Troop 155 was elected 1st Vice Chie Nick Keys from troop 53 was elected 2nd Vice Chief, Zack Palmer from troop 125 was re-elected as Treasurer, and Joe Zimmerman from troop 123 was elected as secretary.
Overall this was a great event and was attended by many arrowmen who enjoyed the opportunity to give service, have fun and make their voices heard as to who would lead their lodge. The lodge will be holding its annual banquet to induct its new officers, thank those officers who are outgoing, and present a series of awards on Saturday November 24th. An Invitation to Become a Friend of Treasure Valley
Under the direction of former Scout Executive Al Swenson and Executive Board member Cliff Anderson, the Friends of Treasure Valley (the Friends or FofTV) was created in April 1994. Through 18 years of service to the scouts in Central Massachusetts, the Friends have completed 482 project days and more than 23 thousand hours of service in their efforts to insure Mohegan Council’s TVSR is and remains the premier Scout Reservation in New England. The scout service center on Harvard Street has also been the recipient of Friend’s project days.
This year our membership growth has included new Friends with extensive experience in construction, electrical projects and plumbing work. With this expanded skill and knowledge base, the Friends are rehabilitating the Handicraft Lodge by removing and replacing all 18 support posts. Additional significant projects at TVSR are planned for the near future.
If your schedule permits please consider lending a hand with the Friends of Treasure Valley on any of the following 2012 Wednesdays: 10-31, 11-14, 11-28 and 12-12. We meet for 7:45AM for coffee at the Magee visitor’s center. Our project day usually ends at noon.

BSA to use Scout Oath and Scout Law for all programs
It’s official: The resolution to move to one Oath and Law for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity, Sea Scouts, and Venturing was approved this morning by the Boy Scouts of America’s executive board.
Essentially, this means every Scout of any age will use the Scout Oath and Law instead of reciting separate, program-specific sayings. Cub Scouts will recite the Scout Oath and Law instead of the Cub Scout Promise and Law of the Pack. Similarly, Venturers will no longer use the Venturing Oath and Venturing Code.
Because it will take time to transition into this new approach, the changes are not immediate.
The Venturing change will not happen until late 2013 or early 2014; the Cub Scout change will take effect in mid-2015.
