On Aug. 26, the 5th annual Treasure Valley Rally was held. This mountain bike race was presented by “Team BUMS” Mountain Biking Club and involved a new and exciting component to the track, a special shorthand course for first-time racers. A portion of the proceeds were dontated to the Mohegan Council. Our gratitude to the event organizers and the many participants that made the day such a success.
Market Your Cub Scout Open Houses
With fall upon us, now is the time for local packs to reach out to their local newspapers, local cable access channels, town newsletters, and radio and online realms to promote your upcoming Cub Scout information nights and activities. Don’t forget to speak with parents who also head your school’s PTA or PTO organizations as well. Most local media will print your advance calendar listing for free if you send it to them at least seven days before the actual event. Don’t leave it up to word of mouth or your pack’s own Facebook page to get the promotional job done. Five minutes of work building a succinct calendar entry (see example below) and emailing it out to all local media, does wonders!

It’s time for Webelos Woods!
Join us at Treasure Valley for a camping experience on the East Side and take part in many exciting activities like knots, geology, Dutch oven cooking, campfires and more.
This event is for Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts with a parent or guardian in attendance for the duration of the weekend.
Boy Scouts and their Troops are also encouraged to take part in this event as program volunteers and/or to assist with the Webelos camping experience.

Autumn is around the corner, bringing cooler temperatures, falling leaves and – POPCORN. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in your town are starting to go door-to-door selling Trail’s End brand popcorn to fund their Scouting activities. Many packs and troops rely on this annual sale to support their activities throughout the entire year. Scouts earn money toward camp, fund trips and buy equipment necessary for the success of their program with proceeds from the popcorn sale. On average, 70 percent of all popcorn sales go directly to support local Scouting.
As the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts have offered for the past several years, in addition to a variety of popcorn products, customers also have the option of sending popcorn treats to U.S. Troops stationed all over the world. 70% of every Military Donation supports local Scouting.

Tom Chamberland Marks 50 Years of Boy Scout Service
Seated at a picnic table overlooking the pond at Pine Point, one of the main gathering spots in East Camp at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation, Tom Chamberland looks right at home. As he should, considering that the last 50 years of Tom's life have been dedicated to the Boy Scout Program, in a variety of capacities. The year 1962 brought him as an 11-year-old boy and first year resident camper at Treasure Valley, a member of Troop 161 out of Sturbridge. Tom recalls being a little homesick that first year.
Later, Tom spent five years with Troop 222 in Sturbridge before taking a few years off to adjust to life as a new husband and father. That new baby, Brian, grew up to be a little boy that became involved with Cub Scouts, and Tom once again found himself involved in the program. Over the years Tom has been involved with Troop 161 in Sturbridge, spending 14 years as Scoutmaster, and pursued a more active role in Mohegan Council by being elected into the Council Executive Board three years ago, and became Vice President of Camping in 2010.
While he remains involved in the Sturbridge Troop, his real responsibility lays within the boundaries of Treasure Valley now. VP of Camping involves overseeing the camp property and being a good steward to it. Overseeing a camp of this size has its challenges, and Chamberland recognizes that the Scouting world today is much different than it was 50 years ago. The property has changed some, of course. Buildings and sites have been developed, retired, repurposed and upgraded. The only building that is still the same, both in structure and function, as it was when Tom started coming to camp is the Handicraft lodge. Even while participating in a program that teaches core values and backwoods function, progress is important. “To keep the outdoor program relevant to the youth of today is important,” said Tom. “We need to meet their needs so that they want to be involved in Scouting.”
Keeping this in mind, some of the future plans for revamping Camp include developing the Venturing program so that they truly have their own area, developing a full BMX program for Camp, and initiating an “older scout” program.

Troop 54 Hits the Trail in Vermont
September 2, 2012
Boy Scout Troop 54 travelled north to Vermont for its August backpacking trip. First, the troop drove up to Emerald Lake State Park to camp the first night. After a short drive from the state park to the trailhead in the Green Mountain National Forest, the troop hit the trail. The entire first day's hike was uphill, and the troop completed the 4.5 miles in about four hours. The Griffith Lake camping area had platforms for the tents, making for a comfortable stop. Fortunately, the troop had set up its tents before a heavy rain hit the area late in the afternoon.
The troop detoured to the Appalachian Trail / Long Trail for a packs-off hike to the top of Baker Peak on the way back the last day. This brought the day's hiking to 6 miles. The troop got luckier with the weather, encountering no rain that day. ASM Keevan and ASM MacNeal found a geocache near the top of Baker Peak. From there back, the trail was steeply down hill.
This was the troop's 44th consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip.

We Appreciate the Investment in our Shooting Sports
Our gratitude to the Youth Shooting Sports Foundation for the loan of rifles and BB guns for use at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation this summer and during the past few summers. This additional equipment assists us to serve scouts better with respect to access to Range Sports and we appreciate this support of our program. We also thank the Friends of the National Rifle Association for the grant that provided for the purchase of hand guns for our Venture Scout Program. We could not serve these youth, many of whom pursue professions in law enforcement, without this generous support.

Announcing Fundraiser for Shrewsbury Cub Scout
A fundraiser is being held in Shrewsbury on 9/14/12 to raise money for the family of Jacob Roy. Jacob lives in West Boylston with his parents and sister. Jacob was a member of Pack 151 and enjoyed scouting until he suddenly had a seizure at school in June of 2011. Doctors have still not figured out why Jake suddenly started having seizures. Jacob has continued to fight his medical battle and has been in and out of the hospital repeatedly. One of his aunts organized an online fundraiser and coworkers of his father are organizing the 9/14 fundraiser to help the family with their many medical expenses.
