Mohegan Council Board of Directors Announce New Scout Executive to Begin April 1We welcome Jeffrey S. Hotchkiss of Indianapolis as our next Scout executive and chief executive officer of the Mohegan Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Jeff will officially begin his new post April 1.
Jeff currently serves as field director for the Crossroads of America Council in Indianapolis. Crossroads of America Council is one of the largest councils in the country. This will be his first as a council executive. He is an Eagle Scout who has held several positions within the BSA beginning in 1984 as well as with other non-profit organizations.
We look forward to Jeff leading our team at the Mohegan Council in service to our youth, volunteers, and our community at large.
Robert Lanava Appointed Quinsigamond District Committee ChairmanOn Thursday, February 16, 2012 the Executive Committee of the Mohegan Council voted unanimously to appoint Robert Lanava as the new chairman for the Quinsigamond District. This is a volunteer position. Mr. Lanava will be replacing Bruce Hopper, Esq. in this capacity, as Mr. Hopper focuses his attention on the multicultural efforts of the Council.
Robert Lanava joined Scouting in 1978 as a youth and has been a member of Mohegan Council since that time. In addition to serving as the advancement chairman for the Quinsigamond District, he also supports Troop 37 as their committee’s advancement chairman. Rob accepted the role of district advancement chair in 2006 and has continued through his more recent acceptance of this new chair position. During his time in Scouting, Rob has been honored with the District Award of Merit (2009) and the Silver Beaver (2011). He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Pachachaug Lodge and an integral part of the Ranger Crew. Rob and his wife Kathleen are the proud parents of Domenic, a Tiger Cub with Pack 37.

February 12, 2012, Worcester, MA -- During the celebration of Scouting Ministry Sunday at Epworth United Methodist Church, two Scouts who are members of Epworth UMC, Paul W. and Gavin M, were recognized for the good works they have been doing. The Good Samaritan Award provides United Methodist churches a means to recognize an individual youth who demonstrates the attributes of the Good Samaritan described in Luke 10:25-37, ministry to others through outreach, humanitarian assistance or advocacy. The recipient may either be a member of a Unit chartered by a United Methodist Church or be a member of a United Methodist Church.
Paul W., Troop 91 – Feeding the Hungry
Paul received a Good Samaritan Award for his work with Carty Cupboard, a local food pantry at Wesley United Methodist Church. Paul is a Life Scout with Troop 91.
Paul first became involved with the pantry with his confirmation class in 2010. The confirmands decided to spend a day in “jail” until they were “bailed out” with food items from the Epworth congregation, friends and family. The food collected was donated to Carty Cupboard. The class not only brought the food to the pantry, they volunteered their time to help distribute the items to those in need. Paul enjoyed the experience so much that he spent some of his school vacation time handing out food at Carty Cupboard. Almost two years later, Paul still volunteers at the food pantry. He and his family move donations from Epworth UMC to Carty Cupboard on a regular basis and Paul helps with the distribution at the pantry.
Paul is in the planning stages of his Eagle project. The project involves refurbishing a room at Epworth UMC to be used as an office for the Worcester Evening, Free Medical Service Program.
Gavin M., Troop 54 – Embracing Membership
Unlike many of his peers who seem to drift away from the church once confirmed, Gavin has taken his membership covenant seriously. This has not gone unnoticed at Epworth United Methodist Church and is why he was presented with the Good Samaritan Award.
Gavin freely shares his presence, his gifts and his talents. Gavin attends worship regularly, and participates in Youth Group. A portion of his allowance goes in the collection plate every week. He has served in the Epworth Sunday School, sings in the Chancel Choir, plays in the Bell Choir, and mans the popcorn machine when Epworth opens its doors to Worcester First Night. He is an active participant in Epworth’s annual “The Church Has Left the Building” Mission day, painting murals at a local community center. He spent a week with the U.M. Army – Northeast and is looking forward to doing it again.
Gavin is a 2nd Class Scout in Troop 54. Troop 54 recently transferred their charter to Epworth UMC and Gavin is excited to be meeting in his home church. He has earned the God and Me and God and Family awards.

Boy Scout Troop 54 travelled to the Harvard Sportsman's Club in Littleton, Massachusetts, to participate in the Nashua Valley Council's Massasoit District Klondike Derby, January 27-29. Typically, this event takes place on snow, with the boys pushing their sleds from one activity to the next. This year's weather called for adaptation: The sled was fitted with all-terrain pneumatic tires just before the event, thanks to Assistant Scoutmaster Brian Keevan.
Led by youth member Josh C., of the Nashua Valley Council, the Klondike was a great success, providing competitions between patrols as well as work toward merit badges and advancement opportunities. The troop food was great, with the Scouts preparing chili for lunch and camp-made meatballs with spaghetti for dinner. Assistant Scoutmaster Keith MacNeal prepared gourmet fare for the adult participants at every meal. The twist this time - he cooked every meal in a wok.
The high point was the last competition event - the Klondike sled race. With ten of the eleven troops fielding sleds, there were two initial heats and a final run. The field was partly grass and mostly mud, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of these Scouts. In the end, Troop 54's Raccoon Patrol took first place, narrowly besting their closest competitors. This was the troop's thirty-seventh consecutive month with at least one campout, and the boys can't wait until the next trip.

Many families, grandparents, aunts, uncles were in attendance at Pack 108’s recent Blue & Gold Banquet. This year's banquet had a Wild West theme to match this summer's Cub Scout Day Camp & Webelos Residence Camp themes.
The banquet began with posting of the flags and pledge of allegiance lead by Aiden B. of the Bear den. Theodore A. was awarded the religious emblem square knot for earning his Jewish religious medal, Maccabee. The religious square knot is the only knot that can be worn by Cub Scouts and is rarer for a Scout to earn than the Eagle rank, Boy Scouts highest rank. Theodore then said grace for our potluck dinner.
Following the potluck dinner the Cub Scouts from all ranks received recognition for their achievements. The Pachachaug Lodge 525 Order of the Arrow sent representatives and performed one of their rituals for the conferral of the Arrow of Light rank, Cub Scouts' highest rank. Those earning the Arrow of Light were Evan B., Harrison B., Nicholas L., and Matthew W. These boys will be crossing over to Boy Scout Troop 110 at next month's Pack meeting.
Matthew B., Matthew C., Bennett D., Daniel P., and Kyle W. all earned their Webelos rank patch. For the Bear den, Theodore A., Aiden B., Brenden E., John G., Michael K., and Rocky P. earned their rank emblem. Michael B., Ryan G., Jake G., Nathan H., Nicholas M.l, Seth M., Owen M., Adam M., Jaden P., Brandon R., and Jacob T. all earned their Wolf rank emblem. Joshua L., Nicholas M., and Owen M. earned their Bobcat rank emblem.
Every Cub Scout brought a western themed cake to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Friends of Scouts (FOS) campaign. It was a lively auction with many mouth watering cakes to fight over. Many cakes went for $30 or more with a couple topping $50! At the end, the participant raised over $250 in additional cash to put a cake in the Cubmaster and District Executive's faces. A fun time was had by all!

Berkshire Bank Foundation Awards $2,500 to Support Mohegan Scouting in Central MA
Berkshire Bank, America’s Most Exciting Bank, awarded $10,000 in grants to four Central Massachusetts nonprofit organizations at an event on February 16th launching the bank’s new Central Massachusetts Commercial team in Worcester last evening.
According to Mohegan’s board president Charles E. Thompson, “The Mohegan Council was honored to be chosen as a recipient of Berkshire Bank Foundation’s good neighbor grants. This funding will be invested in the delivery of a quality Scouting program for more than 5,000 youth locally and we are grateful for this support.”
Lori Gazzillo, Assistant Vice President for Community Relations stated, “We wanted to mark the exciting launch of our new commercial team by honoring four nonprofit organizations that make a significant impact on the community. Community involvement and community giving is engrained in our culture and it is part of what makes us America’s Most Exciting Bank.”
