Event Patch

Troop 54 traveled to Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island, our second time camping there at least since 2006. We went there to participate in the Adventure at the Fort jamboree, a Narragansett Council event. We had 4 youth and 3 adult participants on this trip. We shared a site outside the main open area of the fort with Troop 106 of Grafton, Massachusetts (see location - recorded by Mr. MacNeal). Organizers stated that overall, the event attendance was about 1500 participants.

This event had different logistics than other large events we have attended. Each unit waited in line to unload its gear at the designated drop-off location. Rangers from the council's Camp Yawgoog had brought Gators (all-terain vehicles) to the Fort. They moved each unit's gear from the drop-off to the unit's assigned site. Following a site inspection, the reverse was done for departure. The parking location for vehicles with trailers was almost exactly a one-mile walk from our site; fortunately, we only had to go back for forgotten items once.

The weather was pretty mild. We had only a very light rain early in the morning on Saturday; otherwise, it was clear. The rain forecast for Sunday held off until well after the trip was over. During the day on Saturday, we had sunny, short-sleeve weather.

There were many activity stations for the Scouts to visit, including tug-of-war and salt water fishing off a pier. They also had booths to visit, such as the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Our Scouts skipped most of these, preferring to explore the Fort. One part of the fort interior that was open was a self-guided tour through an increasingly cramped tunnel. Our leaders volunteered at a couple of the stations. More of the stations:

  • 3-Legged Compass Game
  • 9-Square
  • Alligator River Crossing
  • Corn Hole Tournament
  • Escape Rooms (2)
  • Gaga Ball Tournament
  • Kim's Game
  • Kubb
  • Learn New Knots — Speed Bowline
  • Learn to Splice Rope — Commando Rope
  • Make a Paracord Survival Band
  • Maze-O Orienteering Challenge
  • Monkey Bridge Building
  • Pass the Hoop
  • Pie Iron Cooking
  • Rope Making
  • Sharpen Your Scout Knife
  • Tomahawk Throw
  • Trail Cooking Demo

We cooked all of our meals at the site, except for Saturday lunch for the leaders. The event had many interesting food trucks during the day.

The Saturday evening show was a featured event, held in an open area on the north side of the fort. The Order of the Arrow Tulpe Lodge Chief (Kylie Z) was the MC. The governor of RI and the Scout Exec of Narragansett Council both spoke. The show was run by the Lodge.

On Sunday, the Troop 54 wake-up call was at 5:30 AM. Both adults and youth made cooked breakfast. We completed packing up at 7:45 PM. We were checked out at 8:05 AM. We finished packing up the trailer and hit the road at 9:06 AM.
