Buck Hill Camping TripFriday, December 6 - |
Troop 54 returned to Buck Hill Scout Reservation in Pascoag, Rhode Island, camping in the Pulver Shelter and Tent Area. The setup there is great for a small unit: the shelter has power and a concrete slab, the site is right next to a small parking lot with a portable toilet right across that, and the tenting area is pretty flat with a decent fire pit and log seating. We had 3 Scouts and 3 leaders participating on the trip. Arriving in the dark on Friday, we set up our tents on snow with temperatures in the high 20's. During the day on Saturday, we traveled to Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, Massachusetts. It turned out that the Chasm itself was closed for the winter due to icy conditions. We instead hiked Charley's Loop around the Chasm (map) and ate lunch at the pavilion. The fire pit and site had a significant amount of partly burned logs as well as a lot a fuel wood ready to burn. The Scouts broke up some of the logs into tinder and kindling using an ax and hatchet. We consumed all of the partly burned logs, leaving the fire pit nice and clean. This was our 192nd consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip. |
