Twenty Scouts participated in this trip, our largest outing in years! The damage from December's ice storm was significant. On Friday, we had to hack our way to the camp site; ASM Brian Keevan lead the way, cutting a path with a chainsaw. The rest of us cleared that path wide enough to safely reach the site. We then did the same at the site itself, clearing space for the tents. On Saturday, we spent a few hours clearing much of the road to the site to its full width. The older Scouts got extra ambitious, constructing a timber bridge over the muddy turning point in the trail and plugging the flow of water through a rock wall to allow some of that area to dry a bit. Newer Scouts worked to earn their Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit. They also learned some lashings and how to disinfect water for drinking. On Sunday, we hiked to the top of Mount Wachusett, mostly on trails - those had already been cleared almost completely by others. The weather was generally cooperative, with only a light rain during the day on Saturday and most of the heavier rain at night. |
