Summer Camp 2022Sunday, July 10 - |
Troop 54 returned to Camp Wanocksett in Dublin, New Hampshire for our first time since 2019, our fourth session of summer camp there. This is one of two camps operated by the Heart of New England Council BSA. We were one of 20 troops and about 255 Scouts participating in Week 3. We had 6 Scouts and 3 leaders in camp. We camped in the Chippewa site which was added just a few years ago. Two public roads pass through the camp, and this site was on the other side of the larger of those from the main parts of the camp. The site was comprised of nine tent platforms, a fire pit, two picnic tables and a bulletin board. Having our trailer close to the site was really handy, both for uneventfully getting our stuff to and from the site and to use as an animal resistant storage area for food. The temperature was in the 70s to start with and warmed to highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s for most of the week. We had a little rain one day, mostly overnight. Two of our Scouts participated in Brownsea (the first year camper program). Our 6 Scouts earned a total of 9 merit badges and 8 partials. The completed merit badges were swimming, game design, kayaking, archery, rifle and chess. The Scouts focused primarily on waterfront activities and the trading post during open program time, which probably accounted for not completing some of those badges. The camp published a list of activities for each open program and patrol time period; one of those periods had 27 choices. Other activities our Scouts chose included a Lego construction challenge and a Hotwheels ramp building challenge. They made a plaque for the camp to mount in the dining hall. Mr. MacNeal volunteered to drive Scouts to offsite visits to an art museum and ariport, and he paddled across the lake with Scouts to an island for Geocaching merit badge. This was our 163rd consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip. The patches we received: |
