Cabin

For this year's cabin trip, Troop 54 returned to Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation in Northwood, New Hampshire, our last trip there having been in 2015. We had the Northbrooke Cabin. The two separate floors of the cabin allowed us to have separate rooms for the male and female participants. We were joined on the trip by members of the Pack 54 girls den.

Our first challenge was finding the cabin in the dark with no campmaster on duty. We managed to reach the previous weekend's campmaster by phone, who provided some hints, so we did eventually find the cabin. We had a total of 19 participants: 6 Troop 54 youth members, 4 Troop 54 adult leaders, 4 girls from Pack 5 Den 18, 2 Pack 54 leaders, 1 Pack 54 parent, 1 Pack 54 Cub Scout (a sibling) and 1 other Pack 54 sibling.

The cabin had space inside to set up a compact kitchen, so we did all but the Dutch oven cooking inside. The Scouts kept it simple with hot dogs, pasta and such items. The adult meals, by Keith MacNeal, included breakfast tacos, a freshly made Minestrone Soup and Hummus-Topped Pit-Zas (baked on pita bread) and Arroz con Pollo. By the end of the trip, everyone's clothing was infused with bacon grease from the cooking smoke.

In addition to cooking and advancement activities, the youth participants engaged in a snowball fight with another troop, and several of the youth went sledding on the hill next to the cabin. We also went on a hike around camp; it was very icy, so we picked our way slowly.

This was our one hundred twenty-second consecutive month with at least one overnight camping trip.
